High-Temp, Flame-Retardant Plastics Differ
Although high-temperature thermoplastics and flame-retardant plastics belong to the same plastic material system, they have significant differences in material properties, application areas and performance. This difference is essentially due to their different chemical compositions, molecular structure designs, and differentiated functional development goals.
PP (polypropylene) is a common thermoplastic. After different modifications, it can become like high-temperature thermoplastics or flame-retardant plastics, which makes it easier to see the difference between the two.
The heat deformation temperature of ordinary PP is about 60-80℃, and the long-term use temperature does not exceed 100℃. It is also very easy to catch fire, and the limiting oxygen index is only 17-18, which is a flammable material. If PP is modified to high temperature, some reinforcing materials such as glass fiber and carbon fiber are added, or it is copolymerized with high-temperature resistant monomers, the heat resistance can be significantly improved.
For example, glass fiber reinforced PP can have a heat deformation temperature of 120-150℃ and a long-term use temperature of 100-120℃. It can work in some medium-temperature environments and can be regarded as a "little follower" of high-temperature thermoplastics. It is often used in parts around automobile engines, such as intake manifolds, and can withstand the medium temperature of the engine when it is working.
The flame retardant PP is improved by adding flame retardants, such as bromine and phosphorus flame retardants. After the modification, the limiting oxygen index of the flame retardant PP can be increased to more than 28, which can meet the UL94 V-0 flame retardant standard, but its heat deformation temperature and long-term use temperature are not much higher than those of ordinary PP, and are generally still around 100℃.
It is mainly used in places where fire protection is required, such as electrical appliance casings, office supplies casings, etc. The temperature in these places is not high, but the material needs to be not easy to ignite to prevent it from burning too quickly in the event of a fire.
However, you should know that although the high-temperature modified PP is a little better in heat resistance, it is still far behind the typical high-temperature thermoplastics such as PEEK and PI in temperature resistance, and cannot work for a long time in an extreme high temperature environment above 200℃. Flame-retardant PP also does not have the ability to work at high temperatures, and its main value is still in flame retardancy.
Can it have two functions? It is difficult!
In fact, these two materials are not completely unrelated. Some materials can have two abilities at the same time. For example, some high-temperature thermoplastics have been modified to be both high-temperature resistant and flame-retardant, such as flame-retardant PEEK, but this is a flame-retardant function on the basis of high-temperature resistance.
Flame retardancy still depends on adding flame retardants or designing molecular structures, not because of high-temperature resistance. On the contrary, even if ordinary flame-retardant plastics are strengthened, it is difficult to reach the temperature resistance level of high-temperature thermoplastics, because its molecular chain structure inherently limits the improvement of thermal stability.
In the final analysis: each has its own strengths, and no one can replace the other
In general, the core of high-temperature thermoplastics is to rely on structures that can withstand extreme temperatures to solve the stability problem of materials in high-temperature environments; flame-retardant plastics rely on designs that can suppress combustion and focus on reducing fire risks.
The difference between the two is simply that they are good at different things: one pursues "not afraid of heat" and the other pursues "non-flammable". Because of this, no one can replace the other in the industry.
